The Small World of Pheromone Trails
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we consider MAX–MIN Ant System and Ant Colony System. They are generally recognized to be the best performing algorithms of the Ant Colony Optimization family. They are characterized by a quite different way for dealing with the pheromone trail. We propose an experimental analysis for observing whether this difference impacts significantly on the characteristics of the pheromone distributions produced during the runs. The results obtained are analyzed by using some concepts derived by the literature on small-world networks. It comes out that ants actually build small-world pheromone graphs during their runs. This behavior is interpreted here as a sort of decomposition of the instances tackled.

Male orientation to trail sex pheromones in parasitoid wasps: does the spatial distribution of virgin females matter?
We studied male locomotory response to trails and patches of sex pheromone (left respectively by free-ranging females and females constrained to stay on a small area) in the two parasitoids Aphelinus asychis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) and Trichogramma brassicae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Under the hypothesis that the spatial distribution of virgin females differs between these species (s...
متن کاملPerceptual differences in trail-following leaf-cutting ants relate to body size.
Leaf-cutting ants of the genus Atta have highly size-polymorphic workers, and size is related to division of labor. We studied trail-following behavior of different-sized workers in a laboratory colony of Atta vollenweideri. For small and large workers, we measured responsiveness and preference to artificial conspecific and heterospecific pheromone trails made from poison gland extracts of A. v...
متن کاملImproved Lower Limits for Pheromone Trails in Ant Colony Optimization
Ant Colony Optimization algorithms were inspired by the foraging behavior of ants that accumulate pheromone trails on the shortest paths to food. Some ACO algorithms employ pheromone trail limits to improve exploration and avoid stagnation by ensuring a non-zero probability of selection for all trails. The MAX-MIN Ant System (MMAS) sets explicit pheromone trail limits while the Ant Colony Syste...
متن کاملMale red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, determine female mating status from pheromone trails
Recently mated females of some species experience a refractory period following mating during which a physiological change or a mating plug prevents remating. Males that determine female mating status from a distance will minimize time spent searching for mates by avoiding unavailable females. Female redsided garter snakes experience a refractory period after mating due to a mating plug. Female...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal variation in pheromone composition of ant foraging trails
Many social insects use pheromones to communicate and coordinate their activities. Investigation of intraspecific differences in pheromone use is a new area of social insect research. For example, interindividual variation in alarm pheromone content has been found in physical castes of polymorphic ants. Many ant species use multiple trail pheromones. Here we present novel research into trail ph...
